Globe Project Wonderful 2014: What would you give The Philippines as a gift?

I sometimes secretly day dream, what if I became a politician in The Philippines, what would be my dream project? Living in this country for 14 years ever since we returned from the UK made me see how there is so much to improve in regards to welfare and government services.

One of our greatest tests was the Typhoon Yolanda (international code name Haiyan) disaster. Our politicians were exposed to the world by CNN and by the world wide social media. This has also put the question in mind after this what else do we need?

We all know that every charitable organization, private company and individual came up with their own way to help: relief goods, medical assistance, car pool assitance, charity concerts and a lot more. So now the question is what else can we give?

Globe is now asking: “If there is one thing you can give to the Philippines, what is that gift?”

I am now suddenly sucked into a hole and feel like I am standing in front of an audience of the Miss Universe pageant, hands on the waist, smile, breathe in and say...

"Thank you for your wonderful question!" But seriously, it took me a few days to think what could I give. Then I placed myself into the situation when I got caught in the middle of Typhoon Ondoy, I was stuck in my 2nd floor apartment for 3 days deep inside a subdivision. The worst thing was that both my netbook and my phone were totally battery drained. I was cut from the outside world. Life without electric power sucks.

Then it struck me that if I could give a gift then I would definitely would give solar powered packages which included a basic mobile phone, solar chargers and a solar powered LED lamp to every Barangay that is far flung and hard to reach. I saw a solar charger and LED lamp package on sulit.com.ph that would only cost Php1,480. It has the capability to charge phones, gadgets and the lamp.

We all know that the lack of communcation between the families that were struck by the Typhoon Yolanda and the relatives in Manila was so frustrating that even some of my colleagues spent almost 2 months to find out how their relatives were doing. The great thing about this gift is that it doesn't have to be used solely for emergency purposes but can also be used by Barangays that don't even have electricity in their area and they can use them for their schools, there are children that study in the dark with only the flicker of candle light. I'm sure that it will help a lot of people especially in trying times like disasters. Definitely a win-win situation.

I am hoping that after all the hardships that The Philippines has gone through and come out of with flying colours that we learn that it is always better to be prepared for the worst and that giving without the need for recognition goes a long way.

"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another."

So, I wonder what is the one thing that you would give to The Philippines as a gift?

  1. This year, and as always, our gift to our country will have to be continuing to be GOOD CITIZENS and surpass everything that we have done in the past years.
Instead of ranting about our government officials, we plan to be more involved. Read/watch news and express our opinions to the right channels. No ranting on facebook or twitter!

  3. That is a really great idea! Solar powered packages will indeed be very useful whether there's a disaster or not. Such a practical suggestion. I admit I've been thinking of my answer to that question for a few days now but haven't thought of one that's also practical but really original. Hope I come up with one soon. :) Good luck!

  4. Having solar power as alternative source of energy in every Filipino home will ensure that our family will have light and will have the means to communicate despite the odd in storms and catastrophes. Even families in far flung places would be happy to have these. The sun is the best source of energy and it free!

  5. Clean Renewable Energy is the most Practical, Low Cost and Safest Investment you could give the Country. And maybe Inspire other countries (and its corporations) to do the same.

As Paulo Coelho states that: " If you can't say goodbye to your past, then you just can't say hello to your future."

If the Philippines has the Basics Covered (from clean water to medicine, from technology to food) And is Advancing the Products it Consumes (i.e Solar Powered Appliances)

Then the Gift I Wish I Could Give The Philippines is a 'Mandatory Report of the Transparency of Funds and Activities from the Government and its Sectors'

Meaning it would be great if "we" the people the "employers of our leaders" could solidify a law/bill to get knowledge of how our governement our appointed employees, a logged report of thier performance on a daily basis which can be accessed and monitored anytime on a Website and also through Municipal Establishments. :)
