Personal| We were on the losing End but then we were wrong!

When I was 5, I remember watching my mom being twirled around as she gracefully danced to a "swing" song. I knew my family was into performing arts since my dad could sing well and he would usually imitate Engelbert Humperdinck.

Turning 7 and studying in the Philippines, I watched my brothers and his friends practice to a New Wave tune and listen to my older sister sing along with Gladys Knight - both times I wanted to join in.

Then I had my first performance in grade school, wearing a black leotard, gold ribbons and giving it all I got to "Can't Take my Eyes Off of You". That's when I knew I was meant to be a dancer!

Ah Yes, I as a wee lass dancing with my childhood friend JR.

I became a dancer in High School which eventually died down but I almost got to become a regular of That's Entertainment but that failed due to mismanagement. Alas, the dream of becoming a professional dancer faded away.

When I joined my company, every Christmas Party they would hold an Inter-site dance competition with an assigned theme. Last year, I cheered my brother on while they bopped to hits of 1993. This year it was the battle of the Genres. I decided to join - on, so I could finally get a chance to dance with my brother and two, just because I wanted to perform.

Out of all the genres, ours was New Wave and we were going against, K-pop, EDM, Hip-hop, British/American Pop, RnB, Heavy Metal, and Alternative Rock. Now, how were we supposed to beat that?

We practiced for 2 months and our last month was dedicated to everyday practice after our shifts. Bodies ached, misunderstandings flew and pockets almost emptied out.

The big day came and we were early at the venue for the Technical Run where we would practice on the stage plus the lights. It didn't go so well and we failed to remember our places. I felt disheartened and a little demotivated. We just all told ourselves - let's just have fun and give it all we got.

Dress Rehearsal at the Dance Studio (Guess which one is my brother!)

Then the program started. Backstage all the competitors were seated next to eachother and one-by-one were being called out on to the stage. We were then called and we stood by the side of the stage waiting for our queue. Billy Joe Crawford called our name and out we ran up on the stage with so much energy after a meaningful prayer.

During our performance, the screams of the audience gave us more energy and we committed a few mistakes but we felt happy and relieved that we got through.

After everything, we just went to eat - while dining that's when they called out name and we bagged the FIRST RUNNER UP prize. Yes, it wasn't the championship that we yearned for but heck, a New Wave dance where we thought we couldn't make it, yet we still did.

We were so not perfect but we knew we worked hard to out-perform. Next year we plan to bring the house down.

I wanted to share this with you, because it isn't about being the best. It's about pushing your limits, teamwork, belief in one another and faith in God that gets you through the hardships and plus I am so proud!

  1. I believe that "being the best" is not important. That's why I don't pressure my son to be top in their class but I want him to "do his best". I don't want him to compete with his classmates but I want him to challenge himself that he can improve more.

  2. I didn't know there are New Wave dance steps! You're right, it's difficult to dance to, but you guys did well. :) I'm not any good in dancing, but when our class was asked to dance at our legacy concert, we all joined in. It's true that when you have, the audience will appreciate the performance more.
