Feature| Papemelroti: My First and last love in Crafting and Stationery

I remember scribbling sweet nothings onto paper and sending them to my high-school boyfriend. Stationery sets were such a big hit back then and for 10PHP you could buy the scented type.

I then was introduced to Papemelroti by my highschool bestie Dyth. My first encounter with their store was in SM Megamall during our field trip. I was in awe with the cute designs, affordable tag prices and the brown colored textured paper which we fondly called "supot ng pandesal".

I was hooked, from high school until this day, I am a loyal customer of Papemelroti and always will be. My go-to branch is in Alimall Cubao which is one of their oldest branches to date as being part of mall since 1976. Proudly they are the only store that was part of the first few stores in Alimall that still operates to this day.

I had a very lucky opportunity to meet Patricia "Patsy" Alejandro-Paterno who is currently the Managing Director of Papemelroti and the eldest of the five siblings that make up Papemelroti

Did you know that Papemelroti is actually a combination of the first syllable of five names of the Alejandro Family siblings: Patsy, Peggy, Meldy, Robert, and Tina. They are the children of Benny and Corit Alejandro who started the Papemelroti business back on October 13, 1967. Their first store was located along Tomas Morato Avenue and was called Korben Gifts. Then in 1976, they planned to open a store in Alimall. Patricia told me that they said to their parents that they (the five siblings) should have store in their own name. Their Father said "it wouldn't last, the name was too complicated to remember or even pronounce." Patricia smiled fondly of the memory since we all now know how influential that Papemelroti is to the crafting industry in the Philippines.

Walking into their main office, I was absolutely nervous and excited to meet Patricia - it was absolutely a dream for me - and as soon as shook her hand, I was on cloud 9. From their main office on the 3rd floor, she led me to the store and started telling me about how Papemelroti began.

We swapped stories of how Papemelroti has become part of our lives and you can tell with each story she told, her eyes lit up, and I felt how humble and down to earth she is. To my surprise, she was also aware that people would call their products made out of "supot ng pandesal".

Beautiful frames a must in your home.

Then their Family and the business itself was featured in a magazine and the rest of is history. The wonderful thing about Papemelroti is that it is a business run by the family, and the designs are created by themselves, their family is rich with the skills to create and you can read how each sibling contributes to the success of Papemelroti here.

The experience of meeting Patricia (Patsy) was pure joy for me since Papemelroti has been so close to my heart, it has been part of my high school days, to college, to being a mother and I even use their Query cards for my job!

These words from Patsy is so inspiring:
"And so we may dream and make plans and work hard. Just be sure that what you do is in line with God’s intents and purposes for your life. For each one of us, God has a dream, God has a plan. And it is really exciting to find out what that is, to work with God and to make it come true." - Patricia Paterno

  3. Oh my gosh, my daughters and I are obsessed with Papemelroti. It's so interesting how something I loved since high school has now been passed down to them. We haven't been to the main branch though coz we always go to the one in Glorietta. I'm sure the main branch is heaven! :)
