Striking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily Living Book Review
by Martin San Luis

What makes a person successful? The answer depends on how do we individually define success in the first place. To do that we have to question on where this desire is coming from, does it come from Insecurity or Confidence? From Rigidness or Flexibility? Or does it come from Inner Fulfillment or Outer Validation?

With that in mind, how one defines success depend on one’s Philosophy. The editor, John Little, has eloquently taken Bruce Lee’s entries, thoughts and life work in a structural way that can be understood academically which also gives a clear understanding on how to hone your philosophies. The essence of Bruce lee's brilliance has been written down in an authentic and sincere manner as if you've been given these wisdoms for daily living by Bruce himself. It is of no wonder why he was chosen by the Bruce Lee estate to be the foremost authority on writing about his life work.

The book covers 8 parts of Bruce Lees philosophies and his way of life. The book guided me to a deeper understanding on why a man is happy and successful if when he expresses himself fully in his life work and why aiming for perfection is impossible but also necessary.

Although this book covered wise answers from 700 entries of Bruce Lee’s excerpts, we are still encouraged to find our own truths not depending on any masters, dogma or systems that can get us stuck from personal growth.

Partiality vs Totality: Do not cling to partiality, however fantastic – see things from TOTALITY. Therefore, action is not a matter of right or wrong. It is only when action is partial, not total, that there is right and wrong.
– Bruce Lee

The book breaks down 70 topics varying from family, health, perception, knowledge, work, goals, growth and totality. It goes in depth on how the mind ought to be conditioned and the attitude towards thinking and learning. The primary essence on of Bruce Lee’s way of learning is to live life with an open mind and an open heart. Where he sees that we are fully functional only when we are open, just like a parachute.

My overall thoughts, I have enjoyed reading this book. I find it useful in the long term as it reminds me to be in the moment by being in a state of Totality, where I can be whole at any given moment (which is further explained in the book). I see myself reading bits of relevant wisdom when I need it the most. This book is a great reminder on how powerful we can all be through understanding the world within us and the world around us.

  2. namiss ko magbasa ulit hehe nakakainspire pati yng quote na "A limited mind cannot think freely". As a mom, umiikot yung mundo ko sa baby ko, which is ok naman, very fulfilling, pero it's better kung may iba pang bagay na ginagawa. What I am trying to say is that I want to pursue having a business pero inuunahan ako ng thoughts na baka di ko kayanin, but upon reading this review, naisip why not try. Aja!

  3. Honestly I'm not a fan of reading, I'll always go for a movie marathon than reading books but I admit that reading is really a good habit. It doesn't only help you gather information but it also lets your imagination work. Whenever you're feeling lost and you need reflection and quiet time, reading a book will help you a lot!
Good review po sir! :) galing!
