Recipe| Sweet and Crunchy Apple Crumble Dessert

Growing up in London exposed me to a different food palate, than what we are used to here in The Philippines. I have to say I absolutely miss fish and chips where fish is actually cod and chips are not the size of french fries and they are both soaked in brown vinegar, I also love steak and kidney pie - which currently my frustration, the struggle to create pastry dough LOL.

APPLE CRUMBLE

So just to satisfy my cravings, I opt for the easier recipes and one that I have usually made is Apple Cumble which is also known in the US as Apple Crisp. Apple Crumble in the UK originated in World War II as food rationing.

This just literally melts in your mouth...imagine the taste of the combination of the sourness of green apples with the sweetness and crunchiness of it's streusel crust.

Aren't those specks of cinnamon just calling you over to dig that fork in?

With this recipe I'm using Granny Smith apples or the green apples. You can use other kinds or even a combination but of course this alters the taste. Green apples tend to be a little sour, Red Washington Apples, I find pretty bland and Fuji Apples are sweet and juicy.

The great thing about this recipe is that you can substitute apples with peaches, blueberries and my favorite rhubarb.

So without further adieu allow me to walk you through this wonderful dessert which is great with a hot cup of tea and custard, but can also go with coffee with a side of vanilla ice cream or topped with a dollop of whipped cream. You can find the full recipe with ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Stew the apples and make sure it's on a low flame to avoid burning the sugar.

SAM_4864
Arrange your stewed apples in a baking pan/dish & allow to cool

SAM_4865
In a separate bowl combine flour, butter, sugar and salt

SAM_4866
Combine the mixture with your hands, slowly "pinching" the ingredients together

SAM_4867
You'll want a coarse mixture, big crumbs is fine!

SAM_4868
Layer it on top of your stewed apples and bake for 30 mins at 190C or until golden brown
